Siggi’s Icelandic Style Skyr

IMG_0305Siggi’s is skyr which is an Icelandic-style yogurt. Thicker than regular supermarket yogurt, but not as thick as Fage. I would say the thickness is between TJ’s Greek style yogurt (the fruity ones) and Chobani. Reading up on the process of making skyr on Siggi’s website, it sounds an awful lot like how they make Greek yogurt. If you compare the fruity flavors of Greek yogurt from brands like Chobani and Oikos, to the fruity flavors of Siggi’s, Siggi’s yogurts are lower in the sugar department, hence the tartness of their yogurt. Same goes with the plain flavor too. No artificial colors, preservatives, Siggi’s is a good brand for those who enjoy fruity yogurts that has the sugar level toned down.

Vanilla: Lots of vanilla bean specks, but the vanilla flavor is not as strong as I had hoped. Very natural tasting and tart. I can get use to it.

Blueberry: The texture is pretty thick and creamy. Lots of blueberry specks, but not real blueberries. I love to spread this on top of my Kashi blueberry waffles. So delicious sans syrup. Again, the blueberry flavor is very natural tasting, but not as strong as other yogurts on the market. Only has 10 grams of sugar so this is pretty tart tasting. One container (6 oz) is 120 calories, 3 WW, zero fat, 5 milligram of cholesterol, 65 milligram of sodium, 13 grams of carbohydrates, zero dietary fiber, 10 grams of sugar and 16 grams of protein.

Grapefruit: The color is a faint tinge of yellow. Citrusy taste, but the grapefruit flavor is not overwhelmingly strong. The grapefruit flavor is that of the yellow kind, not the ruby red ones. Yes, there is a difference. No real pieces of fruit nor were where any jam-like substance. The flavor is infused throughout the whole product. The flavor is faint so I like to enjoy this one plain-Jane-style to really enjoy the flavor of it.

Plain: Not much difference from TJ’s Greek yogurt except for the fact that this is a much tarter version. At times, I found myself cringing with a sour face. The good thing about a tarter yogurt is that it has much less sugar. Only 4 grams of sugar in this 6 oz cup. I love that I have the option for a low sugar yogurt now. I know a lot of people who add stevia, honey or other sweetener of their choice to their Greek yogurts so the tartness should not be a huge deterrent. The tartness of the yogurt was especially pronounced when I was eating this with some sweet fruits. One 6 oz cup is 100 calories, 2 WW, zero fat, 5 milligram of cholesterol, 70 milligram of sodium, 6 grams of carbohydrates, no dietary fiber, 4 grams of sugar, and 17 grams of protein.

To sum it up, Siggi’s yogurts is the most natural and most clean tasting yogurt I’ve had so far (referring to the fruit flavored varieties).  Varieties include: Plain, Blueberry, Pomegranate & Passion fruit, Orange & Ginger and the recently launched flavors, Acai, Grapefruit, and Vanilla. I feel so luxurious eating Siggi’s. I really like the simplistic design of the logo, font and their containers, but they come with a hefty price tag at $2.39 per 6 ounce cup. You can take off the cup sleeve and recycle the plastic cup. Yay for companies that look out for the environment. I love how the cups are 6 oz. I feel like I get a lot more for the buck. The texture and the high protein content is very similar to Greek yogurt. What is the difference anyways? Read about their story here. It is quite fascinating how they started in a NY kitchen to being sold at Farmer’s Market to making it big at Whole Foods.

  9. Love It

I love this yogurt. It’s all I will buy now. Everything else tastes like a cup of sugar. I don’t miss the syrupy jam-like stuff. I’m addicted to Siggi’s – I won’t eat anything else. It takes a few cups to get used to it, but once you do you’ll never go back.
