Lesser Evil Krinkle Sticks Classic Sea Salt

LesserEvilKrinkleSticksLesser Evil Krinkle Sticks in Classic Sea Salt courtesy of the lovely Kristina over at Nikes and Ponytails. I won her Kernal Season giveaway and she spoiled me with a lot of extra goodies. I can’t wait to try them all out. Lesser Evil Brand Snack wants to “stop the bad snacking” so they make their snacks with all natural ingredients, reduce the fat, no trans fat, no artificial flavors, gluten free, baked (not fried), cholesterol free and no preservative.  The “Krinkles” are little bent potato sticks that are a little “airy” when you bit into them. A denser “cheese puff-like” snack in texture. I like that the potato flavor really shines through and not covered up with all the extra MSG and artificial flavorings.  If I did not know better, I thought I was eating some Pogos from Medora Snacks. I think they are very similar products. Their nutritional information are pretty similar too. An one ounce serving is 110 calories, 2 WW, 2.5 grams of fat, no cholesterol, 270 milligram of sodium, 20 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. No greasy fingers, but you will get “dusty” fingers after eating these. Didn’t feel like these were very salty while eating them, but afterward, I guzzles a lot of water. My mini 1.2 ounce bag was enough to keep me happy for 1 snacking round. The Krinkle sticks are pretty light, so visually, I feel like I get a lot to snack on per serving. Available at Target, Whole Foods and Safeway.

PopChips Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar

popchipsAs if we did not already know PopChips is an amazing company, PopChips out did themselves again. I was pleasantly surprised by a package from PopChips. I’ve already done a review on their original 5 flavors, but PopChips just came out 2 new popstar flavors, Sour Cream & Onion and Cheddar, and they sent them to me to try out. Not only did the package contain the 2 new flavors, but they also included a cute  “PopChips” chip clip, a booklet of amazing coupon, and a hand-written note from the PopChips team.  They really know how to impress their customers.  Check out this wonderful article on the Consumerist about how PopChips went above and beyond in customer service. I was like, “Wow!”  Hearing stories like that always put a smile on my face. It is hard to find such down-to-earth companies like that anymore. I think they out did themselves this time because I like these new flavors even more than I liked the previous 5 flavors. The cheese on the Cheddar flavor (aka Big Cheese) is delicious and cheesy. They have a big cheese flavor and sure beats snacking on neon-cheetos anyday. The Sour Cream & Onion (aka P. Dippy) is divine. Aren’t those nicknames just adorable.  PopChips are all natural, no preservative, and never fried or baked (just pressure and heat). Again, no greasy fingers, just crispy, light and airy, flavor packed chips. To get more satisfaction out of them, I like to dip them in hummus or salsa, not that they don’t already have tons of flavor to them. I like to dip because it makes my baggie last longer. I got the 0.8 oz snack-size baggies so one serving of about 16 chips (23 g) is only 100 calories, 2 WW, 3.5 grams of fat (o.5 gram saturated), zero cholesterol, 240 to 260 milligram of sodium,  16 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 1 to 2 gram of sugar and 1 grams of protein. Otherwise, for the standard 1 ounce serving of PopChips, you are looking at about 120 calories for about 20 chips. If you haven’t had a chance to try PopChips yet, you gotta get your hands on some. They are available at Whole Foods, Safeway, Jamba Juice, Target and I’ve even seen them at Fresh & Easy. Here is a link to a coupon for Target.

Medora Snacks: Pucci, Pogos, Sotos, & Corners

05-01-09_1712Medora Snacks offers an large array of snacks that comes in different shapes and sizes. Their goal is to offer “better-for-you” snacks made with all natural ingredients. Over the years they have come up with many different lines: Corners, Pucci, Pogos, and Sotos. Each line have their own unique shape and flavors which give the line their own cute characteristic.

Corners in Sea Salt: Really good corners. The baggie was perfectly portion sized for one serving. When I first tasted it, the corn flavor really popped out. It tasted like lightly salted popcorn in a triganular shape. No oily residue yet it is  made with extra virgin olive oil. Scrumptious and went nicely with my cup of almond latte. Delicious!! These corners are popped corn tortillas has a very impressive short ingredients list: yellow Corn, sunflower oil, extra virgin olive oil, and sea salt.  One bag is 60 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, no cholesterol, 85 milligram of sodium, no fiber, no sugar, and 1 gram of protein.

Corners in Zesty Ranch: This zesty ranch flavor is delicious. If you like Doritos Cool Ranch chips, you will like this snack. Granted, the texture is different, but the flavor is pretty similar and not MGS tasting. The texture looks like soy crisps. Is it just me or does soy crisp looks like “brain.”

Pucci Pizza Snacks Classic: Taste like really thin bread with pizza flavors, like a more light and airy form of pita chips. If you like pita chips, you will love this. The blend of mozzarella cheese, pramesan cheese, EVOO, and spices that are very savory. There is also a tinge of paprika that I can taste. All the spices are sprinkled on the top of these baked goodies. The shape is in the form of mini pizza slices. Medora Snacks also has these Pucci Pizza Snacks in Tomato Basil and Garlic. One bag is 80 calories, 2.5 grams of fat ( 1 gram saturated), 5 milligram cholesterol, 300 milligram of sodium, 11 grams of carbohydrates, no fiber, 1 gram of sugar, and 3 gram of protein.

Pogos White Cheddar: A real potato tasting snack with white cheddar taste. Hard wiggly sticks. Smells cheesy, but not neon-powder-Cheetos-cheesy. No powder flavorings at all.  One serving is 110 calories, 2 WW, 4 grams of fat (1g saturated), 5 milligram of cholesterol, 230 milligram of sodium, 16 grams of carbohydrates, >1 gram fiber, 2 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. Nice complement to any lunch. No greasy aftertaste or fingers. Will definitely curb a cheese craving. Since cheese and wine usually go hand-in-hand, I’d imagine that these Pogos would be a perfect snack to enjoy with some wine.

Sotos: Nice square shaped chips. No greasy feel. The sea salt flavor is nice and bland, only seasoned with sea salt which is what I crave sometime. It doesn’t have to be all flavor ALL the time. Nice and simple. An one ounce serving is 120 calories, 2 WW, 3 grams of fat, no cholesterol, 320 milligram of sodium, 20 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 2 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein. Truly a CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH snack. I would say these go well right next to a sandwich or wrap, or better yet IN them.

Corners, Pucci, Pogos and Sotos all offer their own unique flavors and shapes. Cute shapes with great flavors. Medora snacks has the perfect snacks for whatever you are craving for. No dips needed. The size of they bags is perfectly portion sized which makes a great complement to your sandwich.

Food Should Taste Good Tortilla Chips

04-20-09_1419One of my favorite quotes from Ratatouille. So Linguini (the boy chef) comments on how skinny Anton Ego (the food critic) is for being a person acclaimed to like food and he rebuttals with, “I don’t LIKE food. I LOVE it. If I don’t love it, I don’t SWALLOW.” Food Should Taste Good, if it doesn’t, then why eat it? Good thing Food Should Taste Good lives up to its reputation of being the most awesome tortilla/cracker chip on the market. Their products are: all natural, gluten free, good source of dietary fiber, no GMO, kosher, trans fat, cholesterol and lactose free. Best of all, they taste amazing.

Sweet Potato Flavor: I love sweet potato so naturally, this flavor is a winner in my eyes. The taste and texture of these chip-crackers are great. Easily dippable and has a surface that is very spreadable. Along with salsa, the combo is amazing as a snack. The chips are so flavorful that one can pass the spreads and dips. The name of the company Food Should Taste Good is cute and to the point. True to the name, these wonderful chips do taste good! One ounce is 140 calories, 3 WW, 6 grams of fat (o.5 saturated), no cholesterol, 80 milligram, of sodium, 18 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of dietary fiber, 2 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein.  The nutritional information is pretty much the same all across the board for the other varieties (plus or minus a little).

Multigrain: I’ve been spoiled to the point where I cannot go back to regular tortilla chips anymore. I love the complex mixture of the multigrain which creates the awesome flavor, especially the sesame seeds and flax seeds that give an extra booster of flavor here and there. The hexagon shape makes these stand out. Love them just by themselves or with salsa and guacamole. Chip and salsa nights can never be the same again. Good thing they carry this at Costco!!

Jalapeno: Delicious fiery red chip with REAL jalapeno and red pepper pieces embedded in them. You get a nice kick of heat in your mouth when you hit those pieces of jalapenos and peppers. Delicious with salsa.

Chocolate: I’ve never tasted a chocolate flavor chip before, so I thought it was quite interesting. This flavor grew on me. Not something I would normally get.

Olive: Nice and crispy tortilla chip with a subtle olive flavor to it and a hint of garlic. Some people may complain that the olive flavor is not strong enough despite this being an olive flavored chip.

Buffalo: Has the great tasting flavor of buffalo wings minus the wings. These really are the next best thing if you are craving for some hot wings. Flavorful and super addictive.

The Works: If you normally like an “everything flavor bagel” or “the works” flavor in crackers and pretzels, you would probably like this flavor. This flavor is just too “busy” for me, but that is just my personal taste.

Like I said before, with all these great flavors chip and salsa night will never be the same again. If you ever run out of ideas on how to pair your chips, check out their website or the back of the bag for some creative pairing suggestion! Jalapeno goes well with corn & black bean salsa, and the multigrain goes well with spinach artichoke dip. Not only do they taste wonderful, all the fun shapes also make them too cute to pass up. So pretty when you sever them at a party. The thick foil packaging keep the chips fresh and cushion the chips in such a way that there are practically no chip crumbs at the bottom of the bag. Attractive and practical.  From the logo design, to the awesome packaging, to the shape and taste of the chips, this product has an artisan baked quality to it. Aside from these amazing flavor, they just came out with four new ones too. Yellow corn, Lime, Cinnamon, and Potato & Chive. Can’t wait until I spot them at the market next time. Good stuff. Keep the great flavors coming. Go online to get your $1.00 coupon!

P.S: I think they are on sale for $2.50 at Ralphs until May 26, 2009

F&E: Sweet Barbecue Flavored Soy Crisps

04-08-09_1850After loving the BBQ flavored Popchips I decided to branch out to find more baked crisp goodies. When I was at Fresh and Easy the other day, these Sweet Barbecue Flavored Soy Crisps caught my eye. These are REALLY good. I am ashamed that I could not stop digging my hands into the bag time after time. If I was to do a blind taste test, I don’t think I would be able to tell the difference between a soy crisp and a rice crisp. Whatever crisps they are, these are yummy. The crisps are larger and thicker than Popchips so I get a huge satisfaction from my one serving of 17 crisps. Looks like a lot!! One serving is 110 calories, 2 WW, 3 grams of fat, 240 mg of sodium, 15 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of protein. The barbecue flavor of these crisp is spot on with no salty aftertaste. Baked and not fried, no artificial preservatives, flavors or colors and zero trans fat. I love Fresh & Easy, this place is seriously like Trader Joes, but cheaper!! This delicious baggies is only $1.29. Overall, I love both the taste and the texture of these soy crisps.

PopChips All Natural

01-19-09_1552Big thanks to Alex over at PopChips for the lovely care package.  Inside the box were 9 single serving size PopChips Baggies. Perfect for bringing along as a snack for lunch. I got all 5 varieties which includes: Original, Salt & Pepper, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Parmesan Garlic, and Barbecue. These chip are never fried and never baked. So how can they make it so crispy, crunchy and so chip-like? “We apply heat and pressure and pop! it’s a chip.” I don’t fully understand the magic of it all, but whatever it is that they do, I like it. These PopChips are yummy and less fatty than normal potato chips, but they do not lack in flavor. The texture of these is sort of like a hybrid of potato chips and rice crackers which is refreshing. I can’t say that these are grease-less because they do use safflower oil, sunflower oil and canola oil on them, but based on the residue left on my fingers and the inside of the chip bag, PopChips are defiantly less greasy than normal potato chips. No preservatives, no artificial flavors or colors, no cholesterol, no saturated fat, and 0 grams trans fat makes me that much less guilty for snacking. I’ve seen the larger bags at Whole Foods for $2.99 and Fresh & Easy for $1.99 ($1.59 when on sale). I haven’t gotten a chance to try all 5 flavors yet, but I did try the Barbecue flavor already and they were very tasty.

Trader Joe’s 8 Grain Crisps

Another great discovery at my trusty Trader Joe’s. I love trying out new snacks and when I saw these displayed as part of their “Fearless Fyler” featured item, I had to get it. These baked goodies are only 120 calories per serving and you get about 18 chips. It’s a very satisfying snack. In each serving you get 20 grams of whole grains and 3 grams of fiber added to your diet. The crisps themselves tasted like rice crackers minus all the sugar coating. No oily residue on my fingers like I would get from eating normal chips. And these are very flavorful from all the 8 grains in it. In case you are wondering which eight grains I’m talking about, it’s barley, spelt, buckwheat, brown rice, whole oats, white corn, rye, and black sesame makes a perfect combination of flavor and crunch. I think I’m in love.
