Gardenburger Portabella Veggie Burger

gardenburgerportabellaA new find in the frozen section — Gardenburger Portabella veggie burger. I like to eat all sorts of fungi so it was only natural for me to purchase this particular flavor. I have never tried any type of veggie burgers before, so this was an entirely new food item for me. I had no idea what to expect in terms of taste and texture. The box contains 4 veggie burgers, shaped into a nice and flat round shape. I microwaved it for a little over 2 minutes and it was pipping hot. I think I over cooked it because the sides were a little dried out. The texture was chewy and although not strong, I could taste the portablella mushroom. My first experience with a veggie burger was a success. I chopped the patty up and put it on my gigantic salad as a topper. I also put a couple splashes of hot sauce on it to give it a little bit of heat. Tasted great inside my La Tortilla wrap as well. These frozen veggie patties are very versatile and makes for a quick meal if you are not feeling anything fancy. These are yummy, but I thought the patty was kind of small. The picture on the box is deceiving because the patty is not that thick and it is lighter in color. One patty is 90 calories, 2 WW, 2.5 grams of fat (1 gram saturated), 5 milligram of cholesterol, 390 milligram of sodium, 120 milligrams of potassium, 16 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 6 grams of protein.

Ingredients:
COOKED BROWN RICE (WATER, MEDIUM GRAIN BROWN RICE), MUSHROOMS (PORTABELLA, CRIMINI), ONIONS, SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE WITH WATER FOR HYDRATION, MOZZARELLA CHEESE (PASTEURIZED PART-SKIM MILK, CULTURES, SALT, ENZYMES), WHOLE ROLLED OATS, OAT FIBER, SPINACH, SALT, COOKED WILD RICE (LONG GRAIN WILD RICE, WATER), MID-OLEIC CANOLA OIL, GARLIC POWDER, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, MODIFIED VEGETABLE GUM, AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVORS (CONTAIN WHEAT), CARAMELIZED SUGAR, ONION POWDER, SPICES, SUGAR, YEAST EXTRACT, WINE SOLIDS, CORN OIL, TORULA YEAST, SOY FLOUR, SUNFLOWER OIL.

Of course, making your own veggie burgers is always the healthier option. Inspired by Gardenburger, I tried to make my own portabella veggie burger with wheat berries, chickpeas and portabella mushroom. I failed miserably. It turned into a portabella hummus more than a veggie burger because I over blended the chickpeas and mushrooms. I tried to salvage it by adding tons of wheat berries into it to give it more texture, but it was still a mess. Better luck next time.
